So how did FUC come about? I’m not sure exactly when. I know myself and a group of my close girls were all in a what’s app group we set up after i was diagnosed, which I named FUC.
It is bolshy and ballsy and in your face but then so is cancer. I know it doesn’t appeal to everyone and there’s perhaps an older generation that may not have the same train of thought. But everyone I’d come across who had either been diagnosed or were effected that’s how they felt. It’s the one thing most of us had in common, young, old, male, female it didn’t matter.
Fuck you cancer.
It won’t please all the people all the time and thats ok. I’ve got ideas in the pipeline for a slightly less offensive version. But the base of what this is all about will stay. Its a way of sticking the middle finger up to a disease that’s scary, life threatening, life changing and life taking.
Its something so many of us have no control over so I suppose this has helped me regain a little control in my life and also be able to help out those affected by it. Which I’ve become very passionate about.
The idea came 1 day and it started to evolve in my head. I wasn’t sure where I’d take it I certainly wasn’t sure it would work. I knew what I wanted to do but wasn’t sure on the details. That’s where Gemma from Combat Dollies comes in. A friend of mine who owns a popular ladies sportsclothing range. I knew her leggings were great as I chose to wear them when training my self and my brother and I had actually worked with her before on limited edition leggings and sports tops for our gym Wassmuffin Martial Arts Academy.
I discussed the idea with Gemma the main part of it being that a percentage of profits should go to cancer charity. Gemma was incredibly supportive and excited by the idea herself. She was and still remains to be a great help to me now. If it hadn’t been for her initial belief in me and the FUC project then maybe I wouldn’t be taking far too long to get a website up and running for those in treatment (I know if I’d been sat in a FUC T shirt it would of helped get me through my day in some small way) or those who are out the other side or those who want to support a friend or family member.
I wasn’t sure of what process to use when picking a charity after going through several ideas, a charity pot, an online voting system, personal requests. I thought the best thing to do would be to pick a local charity and one I knew was small but did big things and could do with the help, as I wasn’t sure how things would go with the brand.
I chose the Wessex Cancer Trust as they do fantastic work for not only those diagnosed but their families as well. They offer counselling, treatments, yoga, reki, massage, book club, drop in centre, just somewhere to chat or hide away if that’s what you need. When I first found out about the centre they were only funded enough to open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10am till 4pm. Since being able to give them my first big cheque I found out they are now able to open 4 days a week thanks to donations like these.so it’s a huge thank you to every fantastic person that’s purchased something from FUC. Please check out their link so you can see how far your help goes and what a huge difference donations make.
Im also going to include some local people that have supported me along the way that may not necessarily help you but may be you know someone it may interest. And word of mouth is a powerful thing.
I’m going to start with my Gym Wassmuffin Martial Arts Academy run with my brother Michael. What a fantastic outlet this has been. Even if not teaching or training I love just being there ask and part of our crazy gym family. Like minded people who just want to train hard laugh hard with others on the same wavelength. We have everyone there from beginners to fighters and run classes in boxing, Thai boxing, ju jitsu, bootcamp, wrestling and personal Training sessions. Its certainly not your normal martial Arts gym which admittedly can be hard to even walk through the door. There is a friendly family atmosphere where everyone supports each other. If you’ve ever been thinking about trying something new aside from your normal gym membership definitely give it a go.
